“Since the name was remarkable, it had to be a remarkable girl.”

– Astrid Lindgren, talking about Pippi Longstocking.

Our Partnership with The Astrid Lindgren Company

A new partnership

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) is one of the world’s most widely read children’s book authors, best known for her remarkable character Pippi Longstocking. Born in Sweden, Lindgren was a committed humanist who fought for the rights of children, the environment, and animals, and her courageous beliefs are perhaps best personified in Pippi, the strongest and bravest little girl in the literary world.

Pippi Longstocking was named by Lindgren’s daughter Karin, who asked her mother for a get-well story when she was home sick from school. The author would improvise tales of a girl with superhuman strength, and the challenges she faces through her adventures where she outsmarts everyone with her courage, strength, humour, and wit.

Lindgren wrote 34 chapter books and 41 picture books, which together have sold 170 million copies and been translated into more than 100 languages. Pippi’s popularity has spread across the globe, and she is a symbol of freedom, imagination, and humour for generations of children.

We are delighted to form a new relationship with the Astrid Lindgren Company, and to be a part of Astrid Lindgren’s and Pippi Longstocking’s enduring worldwide legacy.

Working Together

It was a pleasure to work alongside the Astrid Lindgren Company in developing this release. Our challenge was to set our collaboration apart from other children’s book products in a way that felt true to both Pippi Longstocking’s story and to Paperblanks. We wanted to create a design that captured the essence of Pippi’s world but also had Lindgren’s personal touch. Incorporating a page of stenography from one of the author’s many shorthand pads, circa the late 1970s, was the ideal complement to the design.

Developing the release

Developing this release was a delight for our talented Graphics team, who relished bringing Pippi Longstocking’s unique wit and charm to a Paperblanks cover design.

Creating an ode to this remarkable little girl seemed like the perfect way to celebrate her 80th anniversary in 2025, and we wanted this design to capture all the unique elements from her incredible world.

Our Paperblanks design includes illustrations of Pippi with her pet monkey and her home, Villa Villekulla, in recognizable shades of pink and mint green. The background of our journal also displays a sweet floral design specific to Sweden, to pay homage to Pippi’s and Lindgren’s heritage.
