Generatio

The Book of Kells is one of the artefacts most widely associated with Irish national identity and culture. Described by James Joyce as “the most purely Irish thing we have,” the illuminated manuscript has a long and complex history, one that has been retold and preserved since its creation in the 9th century.

The Book of Kells has had a difficult, even traumatic life since its production in a monastery in Iona, Scotland. Its journey continued to Kells, Ireland, until its eventual arrival in Dublin in the 17th century. While some pages are missing, and the manuscript has suffered some wear and tear over the years, it has remained remarkably intact given its great age.

Although it spreads the message of Christianity by recounting the four Gospels, this richly illuminated and illustrated text is considered less a book to be read and more a work of art to inspire awe in God. At the time of its creation, literacy was rare, so the beautiful imagery and detailed illustrations were vital for communicating Christian teachings.

We have chosen the most famous page of the manuscript, the Chi Rho page, for our design. This illumination begins with the words “XPI autem generatio . . .” The letters XPI that form the primary page elements are, respectively, the Chi, the Rho, and the Iota. These three letters are used as the abbreviated form of Christ’s name in Greek, and open that passage from Matthew in Latin, the language most often used in medieval manuscripts. Also shown is the phrase “Christi autem generatio,” which is Latin for “the birth of Christ.”  “Christi” and “autem” can be seen hidden within the motif, and “generatio,” which was the inspiration behind the naming of our design, is written out at the bottom of the page.

This is the most richly decorated page in the book, filled with hidden symbols and elaborate embellishments that exemplify the awe-inspiring, deeply personal beauty of the Insular art style seen throughout the manuscript.

Created by monastics, this medieval manuscript now resides in Trinity College Dublin. Due to conservation concerns, the displayed pages of The Book of Kells are rotated several times a year. Visited daily, it continues to be admired by all who appreciate Irish culture, heritage, and creativity. Its intricate artwork still draws people into the Old Library and creates a strong connection between the present day and medieval Ireland.

The Book of Kells continues to influence Irish art. From coins and stamps to murals and traditional Irish dance costumes, it remains Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure. We have been inspired by its rich history and how it continues to spark creativity even after more than a thousand years.

Originally released under the name Generatio as a handstitched hardcover journal in 1998, we are delighted to creatively reimagine the design, giving it new life while still rooted in the original folio design from The Book of Kells.
