The Colourful Portrait

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was an iconic cultural figure who left a lasting mark on the art world through her instantly recognizable self-portraits. Her work was deeply personal, drawing from her rich inner world shaped by politics, activism, and her Mexican heritage.

Throughout her career, Frida produced countless paintings, each filled with symbolism that uncovered hidden meanings and reflected her life and experiences. We wanted to capture that same spirit in The Colourful Portrait, a design created in-house by our Graphics team. Inspired by Frida’s background and legacy, this vibrant tribute features butterflies as symbols of rebirth and resilience, a recurring theme throughout her work.

Born in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Frida Kahlo began painting after a devastating bus accident at 18 that left her permanently disabled. During her recovery, she discovered her passion for small-scale autobiographical portraits. Although she had always been interested in art, her accident was a turning point, acting as a creative outlet and emotional escape.

An inseparable part of Frida’s story is her tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera. Another one of Mexico’s most famous painters, Rivera met Frida when she was 15 and recognized her talent early on, encouraging the uniqueness of her work. After marrying Rivera in 1929, she shifted her personal and artistic style. She began to wear the traditional Tehuana dress that soon became her trademark: flowered headdress, loose blouse, long ruffled skirt, and gold jewellery.

Frida’s work continued to evolve over the years, becoming more deeply rooted in her culture and identity. Her artwork grew to reflect a bold vision of Mexican nationalism, connected to Mexico’s contemporary indigenous culture and her commitment to preserving Mexicanidad, the unique essence of being Mexican that encompasses identity, pride, and a profound connection to history. In 1938, she travelled to the United States without Rivera and made a striking impression on the art world. Her debut show was a success, with her bright, traditional Mexican outfits drawing a crowd.

Since then, she has inspired generations, not only artists and art lovers, but anyone who has suffered through tragedy. Her work resonates with those navigating pain, identity, and self-expression. Even in her final years, she managed to paint prolifically and remained politically active.

Frida Kahlo died young at age 47, but her legacy lives on. She remains a powerful symbol of resilience, creative defiance, and emotional honesty. Her lasting spirit and passion for creating art continue to move and inspire us, and we are delighted to feature her in this season’s collection.
