Blue Madonnas
Celebrating ethereal creations painted on glass
A powerful expression of faith and spirituality, stained
glass art is an ancient craft that reached its zenith in mediæval
Europe, gracing the walls and windows of innumerable religious settings.
These exquisite works involved painting, enameling, etching and silk-screening
on glass, adding an ethereal beauty to surroundings by harnessing and transforming
natural light into a rainbow of rich, translucent colors. A source of pride
and joy for each community, stained glass art inspired and educated, enthralled
and soothed, its visual impact transcending the written word.
The Madonna images featured on our journal covers represent traditional
and contemporary designs by Master stained glass artist Albinas Elskus.
Born in Lithuania in 1928, he studied art and architecture in Lithuania,
Germany, France and the United States. Combining centuries-old artistry
and contemporary techniques, he has completed more than 100 ecclesiastical
commissions which are exhibited worldwide in permanent collections and cathedrals.
